Old and new swings

Old and new swings

After forty-nine years of use the 5ft oak swing I built with my mother had to be retired. Now it has been replaced with a Cypress swing ordered from Louisiana.

I assembled the new swing this week and hung it in the spot where the old swing was nestled in along a woodland path. However, one of the posts was a bit wobbly. Off to the quarry I headed to gather large pieces of limestone. After 900lbs of rock were placed around post and mortared in thus our new swing is now quite stable.
It can now provide hours of pleasure for many years ahead. Janet and I can once again stroll out to the swing this Summer to sit and swing with our ice cream.

This week on a maintenance job I tried to bring a bit of Nature to their site. After cleaning up a prairie garden I noticed a erosion problem on the slope. I took time to walk our property and the farmers oak savanna behind us to find some old logs with character.

I found three decaying logs to dig into the slope to help support plants and stop erosion. However, one log that I found with “woodpecker holes” in it was a perfect fit for this garden bed. Whenever, I can make a garden have a Natural look I am pleased.
